Residential Community

The Global Roommate Program seeks to support new undergraduate international students in their transition to Rutgers and the US by pairing them with a mentor in 4 person on campus apartments. Mentors are current Rutgers students who have an interest in living with international students, and can be domestic or returning international students.

The program is grounded in providing support for international students through valuable experiences and positive interactions with mentors.

Programming for this community has included the following:

  • Go Outdoors camping trip in collaboration with Rutgers Recreation
  • Trip to NYC for a Mets Baseball Game
  • Trip to the Von Thun Corn Maze
  • Trip to Eastern State Penitentiary
  • Snowtubing at Mountain Creek with Rutgers Recreation
  • And smaller community programs by campus!

"The GRP program has given me the opportunity to interact with a completely different group of students than I am normally used to interacting with. Although we have different majors and lifestyles, since my apartment mate and I are juniors but our international apartment mates are freshman, it is nice coming back after a long day and having different stories to share. The best part is learning about their culture and way of life back in their home countries. And also seeing them grow so much and adapt so well to the Rutgers and surrounding community. It was nice to be a part of that.

Our first week together was definitely the most eventful. We went shopping for our apartment together, sat down at the dinner table and had our respective and quite different meals, decorated the apartment, cooked together, and just got to know a lot about each other. Thanks to the GRP program, we had a bunch of opportunities to attend events together as well. I wasn't able to go on as many as I wanted because of school commitments but my international roommates went and they really enjoyed it. I signed all of us up for snow tubing so that'll be our first event with all 4 of us together!" - Kriti Gupta, GRP Mentor 2014

"GRP helped me get involved in the university better. My roommates helped me go through the distressed time when I just came here and helped me deal with culture confliction. They prepared birthday party surprise for me. They texted me when I went back really late. My roommates and I are like a family. We cooked and shared each other culture’s food. We went shopping together, we decorated our apartment together, we watched movies together and we talked about funny things together. GRP offers me a great chance to know people who care about me and people I care about."

What is GRP?

Why GRP?
