Achievement in Math and Science (AIMS) — Commuter Program

What is the AIMS Program?

Achievement in Math and Science (AIMS) is a learning community for SAS/SEBS first-year students considering studies in science, math or technology and who have received a math placement score at the Intermediate Algebra or Pre-Calculus level. Students in this program will enjoy the benefits of sharing common academic experiences, making new friends, exploring common interests and being a part of a community of peers. This learning community allows commuter students to participate in academic enrichment activities and become part of an academic community. Students will benefit from special meetings, trips and events with faculty, alumni, and upper class students who will share information about scientific innovation that will profoundly affect our lives.

Shared Courses

In addition to other courses that you will take in your first semester, you will be automatically enrolled in three common courses with other members of the AIMS community in your first semester first semester:

(1) FIGS: Exploring Careers in Science (1 credit)
(2) Precalculus College Mathematics or Intermediate Algebra (depending on placement test results)
(3) Expository Writing (3 credits)

In the second semester of the first year, students will have the option to co-register for specific courses with fellow students in the Achievement in Math and Science (AIMS) community.

Why should I join AIMS Learning community for Commuters?

Students who join this program will benefit from the following enhancements:

The AIMS Commitment

Members of this community will be expected to:

AIMS Advisory Board

The AIMS advisory board is comprised of five students uniquely selected by his/her FIGS Peer Instructor to serve as a liaison to the learning communities’ office to share experiences of the AIMS students and solicit and participate in program planning for the communities. Students are nominated at the end of the first semester and spend the second semester planning and implementing different activities for the AIMS community.

Enrichment Activities

Students in the AIMS program will have the opportunity to participate in uniquely designed enrichment activities. The following events were created to provide students with the opportunity to explore different careers and learn more about science outside the classroom.

AIMS Science Careers Showcase and Alumni Panel

All AIMS students participated in an end of fall semester poster presentation and alumni panel on November 7th. The students gathering for food, conversation and viewed poster presentations of a multitude of science and math career spotlights. The evening culminated with a panel of Rutgers alumni who shared their career journeys.
